Inspiration behind the Thousand Islands

So, it's well known that RR Martin takes historical inspriation and puts them into ASOIAF, but where the hell did he come up with the Thousand Islanders? I mean, seriously, who lives on tiny little islands and still fears the water more than death???

the universe he created before Planetos was called the thousand worlds (Planetos is apparently not part of his universe he created before the song of ice and fire books and everything after), guessing thats where it came from...or maybe in historical context the Easter Islanders or something idk

Interesting. The order in which he developed things certainly matters. But it just seems too unique to be just some random civ way out east. Unless they end up like Tolkien's blue wizards and they really are just an afterthought.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_islands_of_India

The Kala pani is a taboo about the sea in indian culture because it would cause the loss of ones caste. The second links most important line is the first one..Where it states that there are at least 1200 islands around/near India. That's just one possible origin of this idea.

There is also the European aspect that many island/coastal nations came to have a fear of the sea because that's where Vikings could come from to loot/rape/pillage/kill.

Great find Lancelot! And a very interesting read. I'd always thought that maybe it was a mixture of the mysticism of the Druids from the Isle of Mann (Isle of Mona during the time of the Roman Empire), the Timorese, Japanese isolationism, and Fijian exoticism. But you found something where most of the aspects of the thousand islands are present in one place! Awesome. What other cultures do you find have distinct real-world inspirations (aside from the obvious like Yi Ti and East Asians or Mongols and the Dothrak)?
