Chapter 20: Silence before storm
With King´s Landing and court coming to its normal life, Aegon chose to prepare his two older sons for knighthood. He took Haerys and Jaehaerys as squires. He also prepared wedding feast for his son and daughter, during which he introduced Haerys to lords of the realm. During this, Haerys became friend with Maegon Velaryon, heir to Driftmark and was trained in swordsmanship by lord Sarsfield. Aegon also had to solve problem with his brother, when he killed servant in rage. Eventually, he chose to not punish him, which upset the peasants.
While King´s Landing feasted, Stormlands suffered war. Tarths rebelled because of revocation attempt by lord Tommen, but he was eventually able to defeat them.
Next year went without major events, except when Gael Targaryen became pregnant. Whole realm cheered for princess, but her pregnancy ended in stillbirth. Her daughter was born close to the end of second month of year 102. Girl was named Daeoril and burned on courtyard of Red Keep. Gael became depressed soon afterwards.
Even though Targaryens mourned, King´s Landing started to once again fill with people. In the half of sixth month, Haerys reached adulthood and was granted Dragonstone two weeks later. Yet despite living on the island, he didn´t attempt to tame Vermithor.
Year later, close to the end of ninth month of year 103, lord Arryn died and was succeeded by his son.
Baratheons also won their war and imprisoned lady Tarth and often tortured her, if Aegon´s spies could be trusted.
On Dragonstone, Gael became once again pregnant and tenth day of first month of year 104 gave birth to another daughter, who was named after her grandmother.
During second month, Damion Sarsfield suggested tax shifted obligations for nobles, to which Aegon and most of the council (from which many, including the king, owed him favors) agreed.
Gael became once again pregnant and Haerys was looking forward for a son, who could marry their daughter. He wrote to Aegon he will name him after him, so eventually, Targaryens named Aegon and Elaena will sit on the Iron Throne again.
But close to the end of the year, Gael became sick and maester couldn´t find out what it was. He suggested she was weak because of her pregnancy and depression she had since her first birth.
Gael Targaryen was found dead in her bed on twentyfourth day of twelfth month of year 104. Only few days before that, Sunshine laid an egg, which was given to little Elaena. Her dragon, Sunshine, which was by now considered to be the most beautiful dragon in Westeros, made its lair on Dragonstone.
Haerys became depressed after his beloved wife´s death. In the meantime, Aegon had to deal with uprising from House Tully in Riverlands, but after writing to their leader, they ended it and reconciled with Lady Paramount.
In eight month, white raven came from Citadel. Winter was once again here, but luckily, this proved to be short and mild one.
Year 106 came and during third month, Grand Maester Daryn died. Citadel sent another maester, named Beric, to be his successor.
During fifth month, Targaryens celebrated birth of another member of their dynasty. Gaemon Targaryen, son of Alysanne, and his Velaryon wife, had a boy. Although he was physically weak, he survived.
At the same time, Lord Commander of Night´s Warch, Corwen, died. He was succeded by Athos Tully, former Lord Paramount of Trident and self-proclaimed king. He died at the end of ninth month, killed by King Beyond the Wall, Ryk II.
Later that year, Jaehaerys Targaryen took Vaella Targaryen as his wife. While Aegon was preparing fest for them, during tenth month, he found kitten in Red Keep. Because of his stressful situation, he chose to kick it to make himself feel better.
Grand Maester Beric was not able to save his eye, but at least he saved king´s life.
At the beginning of year 107, Night´s Watch elected new Lord Commander, Cley Cray. He died of old age month afterwards. During second month, King´s Landing started prospering again and Great sickness became nothing but memory. Even more good news came, as Vaella Targaryen was pregnant.
At the end of fifth month, Night´s Watch elected another Lord Commander, Ryam Redwyne.
As seventh month came to its end, Vaella gave birth to a son, who was named Aenar. After talking to Haerys, Aegon bethrohed him to Elaena.
Close to the end of the year, Haerys started having problems with his friend Maegon, who became lord of Driftmark. It got to the point when lord Velaryon was imprisoned.
In fifth month of year 108, Vaella finished her studies and became great scholar.
Later that year, Ryam Redwyne died and was followed by Dunaver Jast.
During second month, Grand Maester Beric died.
In sixth month, Ghiscar laid another egg, which Elaena after consulting with Aegon gave to Vaella. It immediately hatched.
Yet problems arose in Aegon´s family. Elaena, his granddaughter, was showing signs of madness and was even talking in strange languages. Vaella started talking how she wouldn´t allow her son to marry her and how the young princess is cursed.
At the beginning of ninth month, Haerys, who was made Hand of the King, came to Aegon with plans for new road network, which would connect Westeros from Oldtown to the Wall. Aegon agreed and first part, called Roseroad, which was supposed to lead to Highgarden, was started being built. Aegon chose to finance it from his own treasury, which was overflowing with gold at that time.
Tommen Baratheon was revealed to be plotting to become Master of Coin, but refused to admit it. Being angered by this, especially because lord Baratheon basically owed his life to Aegon´s mercy thirty years ago, king chose to deal with lord Baratheon once and for all. His spying managed to make people dislike him and soon, many, including Haerys, were part of plot to kill him. He even ordered to put him in stock after his wife complained he was unfaithful to her.
Close to the end of fourth month of year 110, when Jaehaerys was visiting his brother in Dragonstone, he chose to get a dragon of his own. He chose Sunshine, dragon of his dead sister, and managed to tame the beast.
In King´s Landing, little Elaena became sick, but what was more important was that she stopped speaking in strange tongues. Yet Vaella still kept saying the child is evil and that she will only bring death to her house, if kept alive. This extremely angered both Aegon and Haerys. Yet they had to time to deal with Vaella, as lord Velaryon rebelled against Haerys. Luckily, harsh letter from Aegon made him reconcile with his liege lord.
While his work as Hand of the King made Haerys to stop mourning about Gael, he became stressed man, whose only free time was spent with his daughter and parents.
Close to the end of ninth month, another tragedy hit Targaryens. During tourney, Maegon Targaryen was killed by Alyx Lodel. He was burned in Red Keep.
Only two weeks later, Daemion Targaryen walked into Dragonpit and emerged hour later, riding Maegon´s dragon, Dreamfyre.
Close to the end of the year, plot to kill lord Baratheon finally came into fruition. Yet they were unsuccesful and even at the start of next year, when they tried again, he was able to escape.
In sixth month, Daemion became sick, but new Grand Maester was able to heal him. Although, as Aegon´s wife Elaena said, he became quite close to Vaella during that time, as his sister often visited him.
Winter ended during ninth month, before ever reaching King´s Landing. Only one day later, Vaella became sick.
Yet, just like with Daemion, Grand Maester Donnel helped her tremendously and she healed in short time. Yet as many would later say, he would have done better if he let her die that day.
Sixth day of second month of year 112, Vaella had one of her dreams. She said to her parents and brothers that they had to get rid of Elaena. She pleaded them to listen to her, but even though Jaehaerys stood by her, their parents and Haerys ordered her to never speak about that. She left, saying if they won´t do it, she will.
As night came, Kingsguard was ordered to go to chambers of Vaella and Jaehaerys. But when they opened the door, they found their beds empty. Everyone in Red Keep heard flapping of wings, as two dragons rose to the sky from Dragonpit. Vaella and Jaehaerys were gone.
Luckily for Aegon, they weren´t able to get to their son, who was put under watchful guard of Kingsguard. Later, they heard from Free Cities that Vaella the Dreamer was gathering men to attack false king Aegon.
At the beginning of first month, lord Jonnel Karstark died, leaving his son Ondrew to rule the North.
Later that month, Aegon finally found evidence to imprison Tommen Baratheon and later Haerys tol him that he will die in woods, killed by bowman.
Two days later, on seventh day of sixth month of year 112, letter came to King´s Landing.
„I, Vaella of House Targaryen, hereby proclaim my father Aegon to be false king. I proclaim my brother Haerys to be cuckold, on whom his wife cheated with demon. I proclaim my niece Elaena to be child of said demon and threat to the whole world. I have seen it in my dreams and I know my dreams are true. Everyone who wishes to fight on the side of Light and not Darkness, join me! We will destroy false kings and servants of demons and free our realm! Join me and we will burn them all and send them to hell where they belong!
Aegon, Haerys and Small council debated for many hours. Even Elaena joined them, talking how Vaella has gone too far. Strangely, though, Daemion was missing. Gaemon was sent to find him, but returned empty-handed. He even checked on prince Aenar and found him missing. Mere moments later, guard stormed into the chamber.
Great black dragon was circling above the city, spitting fire into the air. Gaemon and Aegon immediately ran to reach Dragonpit through secret tunnels, but before they left the courtyard, Dreamfyre flew south, above the Red Keep, burning Targaryen flag on top of its highest tower.
Dance of Dragons began.
