Ravaged by the rebellion of Faith Militant and cruel king Maegor, Seven Kingdoms are at crossroads. Next few months and years will determine future of Aegon´s realm. And now, at the beginning of year 43 AC, ravens fly from Dragonstone, informing the realm that Aegon Targaryen, son of Aenys Targaryen has proclaimed himself king.

Little bit of information: I started in Faith Militant bookmark as Aegon, son of Aenys Targaryen, also known as Dude who failed spectacularly. My plan was to win the war or at least make it more interesting than "one battle aaand it´s over". While I wasn´t reloading or switching characters too much, I did it sometimes to achieve more interesting outcome. For example, if two armies lead by dragonriders clash, if one is too big, the battle will be over before Dance of the Dragons event finishes...or it won´t happen at all, something that was kind of impossible in the lore. Dance of the Dragons shows us that there were cases when battle on the land was finished (or never happened), but dragons still killed each other. So, while I am willing to accept loss or defeat (as you will see later), my main goal is to create AAR with interesting story, that is as realistic as possible (something that may be extremely hard with CK2), so I have no problem with a little bit of "cheating".

I would also like to note one thing: I am not natural English speaker. So, while I believe my English is decent enough to write AAR and communicate with people on the internet, there will be some grammar mistakes, for which I apologize. Also, this is my first AAR and because of this, there is gradual change in image editing and chapter size (earlier chapters are much shorter than later ones).

Overview - 43 AC
Basic information about Westeros at first day of the first month of the year 43 AC.

Great houses of Westeros

House Targaryen
Two branches of this house currently exist: House Targaryen of King´s Landing and House Targaryen of Dragonstone.
House Targaryen of King´s Landing
Current rulers of Westeros. Leader of this house is Maegor Targaryen, only child of Visenya Targaryen and younger son of Aegon the Conqueror. He has three wifes and is currently childless.

House Targaryen of Dragonstone
Currently in rebellion against House Targaryen of King´s Landing. They are children of late king Aenys I. Targaryen and grandchildren of Rhaenys Targaryen and Aegon the Conqueror. They are lead by Aegon Targaryen and his sister-wife Rhaena. Aegon also has two daughters, Aerea and Rhalla.
Spoiler: show
Image

House Lannister of Casterly Rock
Lead by Lyman Lannister, lord of Casterly Rock and Warden of the West. He is supporting Maegor I. in his war against Faith Militant, but is also friend of Aegon Targaryen. Thus far, allegiance of House Lannister to House Targaryen of King´s Landing beyond helping with fanatics is uncertain. Some of their vassals chose to stand with Faith Militant.
Lord Lannister has two sons.
Spoiler: show
Image

House Greyjoy
Lead by Lord Paramount of the Iron Islands, Goren Greyjoy, they stand aside from all wars currently fought in Westeros.
Lord Goren has a son and two daughters.
Spoiler: show
Image

House Tully
Lead by Lord Paramount of Trident, Melwys Tully, they do not participate in any war, but some of their vassals support Faith Militant.
Lord Melwys has four sons, but his oldest son is member of Night´s Watch.
Spoiler: show
Image

House Arryn
Lead by Lord Paramount of the Vale and Warden of the East, Hubert Arryn, this house has chosen to support Maegor I. in his war against Faith Militant.
Lord Hubert has three sons and three daughters.
Spoiler: show
Image

House Stark
Lead by Lord Paramount of the North and Warden of the North, Brandon Stark, they do not support either of two kings nor High Septon.
Lord Brandon has one son.
Spoiler: show
Image

House Baratheon
Lead by Lord Paramount of the Stormlands, lord Davos Baratheon, they do not participate in any of the wars. Lord Baratheon is uncle to Aegon Targaryen, though, so time will show, if anything comes out of this family bond.
Lord Davos has five sons.
Spoiler: show
Image

House Tyrell
Lead by Lord Paramount of the Reach and Warden of the South, Theo Tyrell, they support Maegor I. in his war against the Faith. Being location of Starry Sept, Reach also has huge presence of supporters of the Faith and it is questionable, how many of Tyrell vassals will stand with them in this war.
Lord Theo has one son and a daughter.

Wars

Rebellion of the Faith
Practice of incest among Targaryens , just like acts of Maegor the Cruel, have angered High Septon. He has amassed about 40 thousand men from Faith Militant and aims to destroy Targaryens. His main goal is to defeat Maegor, who has more power, but his armies are also hostile towards armies of Aegon and his supporters. High Septon has gathered support of few minor houses, mainly from Westerlands, while Maegor himself is supported by all of Crownlands except Dragonstone and its vassals (who fight for their lord, Aegon). Main houses that support Maegor are houses Lannister, Tyrell and Arryn.
(This war was not fought by me and while I would love to include details of it in this AAR, I can´t because of lack of information. Some information will be there, though.)

Targaryen civil war
After death of Aenys Targaryen, Visenya flew to Essos and brought back her son, who claimed the throne. Maegor did not gain loalty of lords of Narrow Sea, as he flew immediately into King´s Landing (where he was able to take Viserys Targaryen as a hostage). Son of Aenys, Aegon, being with his sister and their dragons at Crakehall at that time, amassed small army and marched east. He has proclaimed himself king and all vassals of Dragonstone pledged their support to him. As big houses consider threat of Faith Militant more urgent and don´t particularly like Maegor, he is left on his own. Despite this, he has more men than young Aegon and, what is most important, stronger dragons.

Dragons
There are currently 8 dragons alive (I enabled rule for „Valyrians only“ taming and hatching, because i tis more realistic, as the only case when non-Valyrian rode dragon was with 3 Dragonseed during the Dance, while in the mod, every mayor ends up taming them, with many living Targaryens then left without a dragon).
Maegor controlls two biggest dragons, Balerion and Vhagar. He personally rides the Black Dread, while his mother, Visenya, rides younger Vhagar. There are currently no untamed or wild dragons in King´s Landing.
Aegon has more dragons at his disposal, but neither of them is even close to Maegor´s beasts. He himself rides Quicksilver, former dragon of king Aenys and also the oldest of his dragons. His sister, Rhaena, is rider of dragon Dreamfyre. Their Brother Jaehaerys has dragon Vermithor and their sister Alysanne has dragon Silverwing. While both dragons are old enough to carry a rider, their riders are still just children and therefore yet unable to participate in this war (but if Dragonstone is attacked, they may try to defend it). There are 2 untamed dragons on Dragonstone: Meleys, young red dragon and Caraxes, one year old hatchling, which, while not even close to the size of Aegon´s or Rhaena´s dragons, is strong enough to carry a rider.

Chapter 1: Start of rebellion
Aegon was left in difficult position. His army was in hostile territory and his dragons were no match for combined power of Balerion and Vhagar. He has decided it will be for the best if he combined his forces with fleet of lord Velaryon and tried to get more dragons to counter his enemy.
Image
Lord Velaryon has met Targaryen host close to Duskendale and ferried them to Dragonstone. There, Aegon´s mother, Alyssa Velaryon, decided to tame the dragon. Her goal was to tame Meleys, but red dragon was nowhere to be found. Eventually, she abandoned her search and instead tried to tame Caraxes, whose lair was known. She succeeded, increasing number of Aegon´s dragons to 3.
Image
Targaryen host, lead by Aegon, Rhaena and Alyssa has departed. Their plan was simple: Lay siege to castles at Craclaw Point, luring out one of Maegor´s dragons. First castle they sieged was Cracklaw Barren, which refused to surrender. Thus, Aegon unleashed Quicksilver on them, greatly reducing their number and morale, shortening the siege.
Meanwhile, huge army of Faith Militant sieged King´s Landing and was able to take the city. Population wasn´t happy with their new lords and Faith´s army had to stay there, securing the city against uprising or attacks from Maegor´s forces. They were able to capture king´s wifes, though, but neither king, his mother or young prince Viserys were there.
Image
Aegon was locked at the siege of Cracklaw Barren, when message came. Lord Gawen Westerling has decided to switch sides and now supported Aegon. Celebrations were held at Targaryen camp. Many said that after realizing Maegor can´t even hold his capital, lords will see he is no true king and will now flock to Aegon in huge numbers. Some said that it is only a question of time before Lannisters declare for Aegon too.
Their joy was short, as in next two weeks, only house Stackhouse from Catswold declared for Aegon. Yet there was also success, as Aegon was able to finally capture Cracklaw Barren.
Image
With the fall of castle, Aegon was now free to siege surrounding lands with all their riches. With no response from Maegor, he has focused to gather supplies and gold from villages in the area, while waiting for reinforcements from Crag. At this time, lord Steffon Grafton from Gulltown pledged his loyalty to Aegon, providing him with gold, men and ships from one of great cities of Westeros.
At the same time, Faith Militant abandoned the capital, giving controll to their allied houses. They chose to siege more castles in Crownlands and maybe even face Maegor. High Septon executed two of Maegor´s wives, leaving only his Hightower wife alive.
Image
Aegon moved to Whispers, where he once again used Quicksilver to defeat castle´s garrison. He spent few months there, but before he could take controll of it, two messages came. One of armies of Faith Militant was moving towards his forces. Second, more important message, was from the north. Visenya came.
Image
Decision was quick. This was opportunity they cannot pass. Visenya arrived to raise small army for Maegor to defeat Aegon´s forces. She managed to gather only few dozens of men yet and was thus easy target. Aegon divided his forces, sending bigger part of his army to embark on ships that were waiting for them at the shore. Meanwhile, Aegon, Rhaena and Alyssa will lead 900 men to fight Visenya´s troops, while dragonriders will engage Vhagar in the sky.

Battle of Dyre Den
18th day of second month in year 44 AC, first major battle between Targaryen forces occured. While Aegon and his soldiers were able to intercept even bigger groups of Maegor´s troops and sieged one of his vassal´s castles, this was the first time dragons fought against each other since before the Doom of Valyria.
This battle was in fact two separate battles, one fought on the ground and second fought in the sky. Ground battle was over extremely quickly, as Aegon´s forces had numbers fourteen times bigger than Visenya´s „army“. But the main battle occured in the sky.
Image
Aegon´s dragons came from south. Visenya was already in the air, circling above the filed on the back of Vhagar. Great dragon roared and three smaller attacked him.
While Vhagar was bigger than any of Aegon´s dragons, she was also less agile than they were. Visenya had trouble focusing her dragon on only one target, as both Dreamfyre and Caraxes distracted Vhagar. It was too late for her to see Quicksilver, falling on her from above. Size of Vhagar prevented Quicksilver from doing huge damage, both the dragon and her rider were wounded.
Image
Wounds that Vhagar suffered hindered her ability to face all three dragons at once even more. Slowly, her movements became slower and slower and she started to lose height. It was then when Caraxes landed on her head and plucked out one of her eyes with his claws. Vhagar roared in pain and fell to the ground.

Chapter 2: To King´s Landing

Body of Visenya was nowhere to be found. It was only two weeks later when news came to Aegon about the old queen. She was apparently carried from the battlefield by few remaining Maegor´s loyalists. Her wounds were so severe, though, that she died few days later.
Image
Other news came from Dragonstone. Dragon Vermithor laid an egg, but because of lack of Targaryens, young prince kept it for now.
Aegon and his forces boarded Velaryon´s ships and sailed south. With king´s fleet destroyed during siege of King´s Landing by Faith militant, Maegor had no way to intercept Aegon´s forces while they were in Blackwater Bay. Nobody knows, why didn´t he just fly on Balerion´s back to face Aegon, but maybe he was actually afraid. Death of Visenya showed him how big of a threat Aegon really is.
Nevertheless, nobody attacked Aegon´s fleet on their way to Massey´s Hook, where he laid siege to Stonedance. Only month later, spies in the capital brought interesting news to Aegon: Maegor has defeated army at King´s Landing and left the city almost undefended. His army was moving north, to face Faith Militant on Cracklaw Point.
Image
Aegon, Rhaena, Alyssa Velaryon and Daemon Velaryon talked about their options throughout the night and made a decision: They will attack King´s Landing.
They set sail and in less than two weeks landed in Blackwater Bay. Siege wasn´t long and Red Keep fell to Aegon´s troops. He didn´t use dragons, though, to show people he wasn´t some sort of conqueror that destroys their cities, but ruler returning home. And besides conquest of the capital, Aegon found someone from his family in the keep: Viserys.
Young Targaryen was at King´s Landing at the time of Maegor´s arrival and was hostage throughout the war. Neither Aegon nor Rhaena have seen their brother in more than a year and didn´t completely trust him. Even though his mother was against it, they confined Viserys to the Red Keep. This put a strain between two brothers, as Aegon didn´t completely trust him, after he was so long in presence of Maegor and even accompanied him to the battle.
Image
Aegon sent ravens out of Red Keep, once again proclaiming himself true king of Seven Kingdoms and asked all lords to come to King´s Landing, to swear fealty to him.
Only lord that answered was Morgarth Donniger, lord of Sunrise Keep. To even worsen the situation, Westerling army was attacked by Maegor when they were on Crackclaw Point and was completely obliterated.
Image
Even with destruction of Westerling host, Maegor was still occupied on Crackclaw Point and Aegon ruled safely from King´s Landing for more than two months. On seventh day of ninth month, huge shadow appeared over King´s Landing.

First Battle of King´s Landing
Maegor Targaryen finally came on the back of Balerion, stirring some people to attack Aegon´s soldiers in the streets. All three dragonriders flew to meet him.
Dreamfyre was the first to attack, but Balerion passed him and went straight for Quicksilver, wounding the dragon. It was not without damage to himself, though, as his wing was damaged by Dreamfyre during his attack. Maegor turned Balerion to face three dragons once again. Aegon tried to turn around wounded Quicksilver, but he was not fast enough.
Image
He was saved by his mother, Alyssa, who threw herself and Caraxes in front of Balerion. Unlike with Vhagar, though, Caraxes was no table to hurt Balerion and was caught in his jaws. Balerion immediately killed him, sending Alyssa down. She was caught by Rhaena and Dreamfyre, but she was severely injured from her fight.
Image
Dreamfyre and Quicksilver were at mercy of the Black Dread, but then scorpion bolts flew from the city below. Aegon´s army was able to defeat the rebellion and was now firing at Maegor´s dragon. Knowing he may lose already wounded Balerion, he turned his dragon around and flew away.

Chapter 3: The King, or Back and There Again

While Aegon was able to withstand Maegor´s attack, Caraxes was dead and Quicksilver wounded. His situation was severe: Balerion was able to defeat his dragons and the only thing that saved them was his army. If Maegor ever returned with all of his forces, he would obliterate them. With this in mind, he offered Viserys a deal: He will take their mother to Dragonstone and will attempt to tame Meleys. For this, Aegon will name him Prince of Dragonstone and also his heir, until son is born to him. Viserys accepted and left for Dragonstone.
Only week after the battle, message came. Maegor has met with his main army and was moving south, pursuing fifteen thousand of Faith Militant.
Image
Message also came from Dragonstone: Viserys tried to tame Meleys, but was unsuccessful and dragon wounded him. Faith´s forces were also moving close to the capital. Realizing he may easily be caught in the city when Faith Militant and Maegor come, he left the city with his army. They sailed to Crackclaw Point, where, despite all of the fighting, his forces still held some foothold.
His fears proved true, as Faith Militant laid siege to the city, which was later relieved by Maegor and army twice as strong as theirs, which in turn after their victory besieged the city.
Image
Even though Faith was losing the war and Maegor was sieging King´s Landing, Aegon wasn´t losing hope. He still believed his friend, Lyman Lannister, would sieze opportunity to abandon Maegor and come to his aid, providing him with such needed troops. Viserys was also on Dragonstone, trying to tame Meleys. Some may say he was fool to believe in this, but up to this point, no lord outside of Crownlands helped Maegor with his war against Aegon.
End of the year saw Aegon sieging North Crackclaw. He managed to kill Vhagar and for a short time take King´s Landing in year 44 and despite losses at the end of it, he felt eager to continue his war.
His enthusiasm was destroyed when message came from Dragonstone. Viserys once again failed to tame Meleys, but now maester was forced to cut off one of his hands. Young prince was also severely burned and unable to continue his attempts. There were also good news, though. Maegor departed from King´s Landing and took his whole army with him. Aegon had once again clear path towards the city he so desired.
As he was preparing his landing, another bad news came. Alyssa Velaryon died on ninth day of second month in her bed. Riverlands also joined Maegor in his war against Faith Militant. Nevertheless, Aegon continued with his plan and quickly captured King´s Landing with help of soldiers from House Serry of Southshield, that declared for him.
Image
Maegor heard of recapture of King´s Landing and marched his troops south. Serry´s men meanwhile marched to Hayford and besieged the castle.
Second quarter of the year started and things looked similar to what they were half a year ago. Faith Militant were losing to Maegor, who in turn lost controll of the capital to Aegon. But things were about to change. 25th day of fourth month, message carried by white raven came to Red Keep. Winter was coming.
Image
At the same time, men from mountain clans of Vale proclaimed their king, who now started preparing invasion against the Vale. Situation was looking good for Aegon. With controll over King´s Landing and winter on its way, there was big chance war would have to stop for some time, until the winter is over. Armies of small houses that declared for Aegon were also finally in Crownlands and were now sieging castles around King´s Landing.
But then Maegor came. He defeated Serry´s at Hayford and marched to King´s Landing. With Quicksilver healed, Aegon was willing to give him a fight he so desired. Some may argue that he also wanted to risk everything rather than run back to Dragonstone and wait out winter there. So started second battle for King´s Landing.

Second Battle of King´s Landing
While literally not being second battle of this war that took place close to capital, it was second battle in the city between Aegon and Maegor. This time, Maegor brought with him army of 6000 and support troops from other houses that fought with him against the Faith. Even though they weren´t part of this war, they chose to fight with the king.
On the other side, Aegon had only 2000 soldiers, but he had advantage of city walls.
Maegor´s army attacked and king flew still wounded Balerion to face his nephew and niece. He was able to hurt Quicksilver multiple times, tearing off his right leg. Dreamfyre was able to cause even more damage to Balerion´s wing, maiming it to the point when it was almost impossible for big dragon to fly. Despite this, Balerion wounded Dreamfyre on its neck. Aegon, seeing weakness in Balerion, flew Quicksilver at his enemy. White dragon was able to get to Balerion´s side and tear huge pieces of meat from his body. Balerion spew fire on him and caught him by his wing, which he tore off. Quicksilver and Aegon fell.
Image
After her husband´s death, Rhaena tried to use Dreamfyre to kill Balerion, but the battle was over. Both dragons were severely hurt and were unable to continue. Balerion landed on courtyard of the Red Keep and Dreamfyre fell to the harbor. There they were found by Daemon Velaryon, who was trying to save as many soldiers as possible. He carried Rhaena onto his flagship. Dreamfyre was strong enough to crawl to the ship, which barely remained afloat.
King´s Landing was lost and king was dead.

Chapter 4: Defiant queen

Moon was shining through the entrance to balcony. Five people around the Painted table sat in silence.
„Everything is lost,“ started lord Daemon Velaryon, „only thing we can do now is to surrender and hope king Maegor will be merciful.“
„Oh, sure,“ replied Edwell Celtigar, lord of Claw Isle, „and then we will go to have nice dinner where he will order his guards to slit our throats. If we are lucky, of course. We may end up in his dungeons, being tortured for weeks.“
„Still, isn´t it better for the realm if we give up fighting?“ asked lord Aegor Sunglass, „how many have died in this war?“
„Maybe we could hire killers, who could get rid of the king for us. Then we could put prince Jaehaerys on the throne,“ suggested lord Taelon Bar Emmon.
„They killed my husband,“ said quietly Rhaena Targaryen, „there will be no peace. Not until that monster is dead.“
„We cannot possibly hope to defeat him,“ said Velaryon, „and with all due respect to lord Bar Emmon, murderers won´t work. He is surrounded by Kingsguard and all his food is checked by his most loyal servants, so poison is also impossible.“
„Maybe we could hire Men without faces. They would get rid of him easily,“ said Celtigar.
„We don´t have the money,“ reminded everyone Velaryon, „we have to surrender. It is the only way.“
„We will not surrender, lord Velaryon! Not now and not ever!“ said Rhaena, „I will not hear about this. We will fight just as Aegon fought and we will win!“
„And how do you plan to do it, your grace?“ asked Velaryon, „our army is gone, king Aegon and Quicksilver are dead and your dragon will follow them soon.“
„She won´t, I assure you about that, my lord,“ answered Rhaena, „And you forget one important detail. Balerion is in bad state too. I have seen his wounds. He won´t be able to fly to Dragonstone for a long time. Despite that, Maegor will want him at his side, while he leads the army, so he will probably have to move by foot. I know my uncle and there is no way he would abandon his forces and sit in King´s Landing, doing nothing. And he won´t abandon his only remaining dragon, if it even means threathening mentioned dragon´s life. This will also slow his healing, giving us even more time.“
„More time to do what?“ asked Celtigar, „we are still outnumbered and even if Balerion takes five years to recover, he will eventually come for us. And what if Redwynes, Lannisters or Greyjoys decide to help him? Lord Velaryon´s fleet is not big enough to hold against even one of those houses.“
„That´s why we have to make sure none of major houses will join Maegor,“ said Rhaena.
„And how do you plan to do that?“ asked Velaryon.
„As long as Faith Militant fights their war, major houses will stand aside from ours. Especially when we pose even smaller threat to Maegor,“ said Rhaena, „we need to make sure Maegor doesn´t defeat them until we are ready.“
„Rady for what?“ asked Sunglass.
„For attack against Balerion,“ answered Rhaena.
They were all surprised and tried to talk all at once. She raised her hand.
„I know it may seem insane, but listen to me. There are three more dragons on Dragonstone. Both Vermithor and Silverwing already have riders and in few years, Jaehaerys and Alysanne will be old and strong enough to ride them to battle. And after Viserys heals from his wounds, he will try to tame Meleys once again.“
„That didn´t work quite well first two times,“ said Bar Emmon.
„He will do it. And if he fails, any of you is allowed to try it.“
None of them said anything. Good, thought Rhaena, at least they know when to shut up.
„Maegor doesn´t know if we use our remaining dragons now, when Aegon is dead,“ continued Rhaena, „he cannot divide his army, because part that he sends after us may be easily obliterated by our dragons. He needs to keep all men with him, which will slow him and make him unable to react to our attacks. And if he gets close to us, we will simply board our ships and flee to take another castle. He will go after us, because he sees us as bigger threat than Faith Militant.“
„And what about his lords?“ asked Bar Emmon, „even if Maegor follows our army, Lannisters, Tyrells and others will destroy the Faith Militant.“
„That might not be the case,“ said Velaryon, „I mean, would you fight war for king you don´t like, if he just ran away to deal with issue that you think is not important? They will be in the field and they will happily go after any group of Poor Fellows they will find, but I doubt they will actively search for battle or go to Oldtown to free it from Faith´s occupation.“
„Exactly,“ answered Rhaena, „without his leadership, their progress will be slower. And as long as the Faith keeps fighting, we are safe. Now, to my plans. We still occupy some land on Crackclaw point. I will gather new troops and set sail for the peninsula. There we will lay siege to castles that were conquered either from the Faith or from us and have small garrisons. When Maegor arrives, we will board our ships and sail to King´s Landing, which we will raid. And when he comes close to the capital, we will abandon it and return to Crackclaw.“
„Why would he keep chasing us?“ asked surprised Celtigar, „I am sorry your Grace, but if this is your plan, then...“
„You don´t know him as I do,“ interrupted him Rhaena, „he is like mad dog. He will go after us, trying to find us and reconquer Crownlands. His sole goal is to destroy other claimants to the throne and if whole kingdom burns in the process, he won´t mind. This plan will work.“
All lords looked at each other. After few moments of silence, when everyone was thinking about what was said, they all agreed to support her.
„We should prepare coronation of prince Jaehaerys,“ said lord Sunglass.
„What? Why?“ asked Rhaena.
„He is the next in line, isn´t he?“ asked lord Bar Emmon.
„Aegon has left behind him two daughters. By law of primogeniture, both Aerea and Rhalla come before Jaehaerys,“ said Rhaena.
„I agree with my niece,“ said lord Velaryon, „Aerea is the rightful heir.“
While it took them some time to discuss this, eventually, they agreed to crown Aerea the queen.
We will come for you, Maegor, thought Rhaena. We will come for you.

Chapter 5: Essosi greed

Few days after king Aegon of house Targaryen, second of his name, King of the Andals, Rhoynar and the First men, Protector of the Realm and Lord of Seven Kingdoms died, queen dovager Rhaena donned crown on the head of Aerea Targaryen. She herself has claimed the title of Protector of the Realm and queen´s regent.
Queen Regent Rhaena started preparations for continuing of the war. House Donniger of Sunrise Keep sent message from North Crackclaw. They have brought more than two thousand men there and besieged the castle. Even more good news came, as Torrek, king of mountain clans from the Vale gathered an army and attacked House Arryn. Arryn army that was retaking land conquered by Faith Militant in Whispers cancelled their siege and started marching back home with haste.
Image
Rhaena managed to help Donniger´s with their siege, but after getting message of Maegor´s arrival retreated and sailed for the capital. Donniger troops tried to escape by land, but were caught by Maegor.
Meanwhile, ceremony in memory of late king Aegon took place, attended by Rhaena, who stopped at Dragonstone to resupply and prince Viserys, whose condition was worsening.
Image
Only two weeks later, Viserys Targaryen succumbed to his wounds from dragon Meleys at the age of 17. Funeral was prepared and message was sent to Rhaena. Luckily, Queen Regent got some good news. House Wagstaff of Adderdell joined her cause, but their numbers weren´t even enough to compensate for losses suffered by House Donniger when they weren´t quick enough to escape from Maegor´s army.
Viserys Targaryen was burned on the courtyard of Dragonstone, in presence of his nieces and younger siblings.
Image
War dragged on and it was now clear that Rhaena´s plan worked. Maegor was too afraid to divide his forces, knowing his enemies are quicker than him, but also unable to fly on Balerion to pursue Velaryon fleet, while also not being able to just sit in King´s Landing, because, in his mind, he would look as a weak king.
At the same time, word came from Storm´s End. Robar Baratheon, heir of lord Baratheon has returned from his travels around the world. Some singer attempted to call him Seastag, but nobody liked the name and singer was not seen afterwards.
Image
And then, new power entered the war. Not Greyjoys, Baratheons or Starks, not even Dorne. No, this power was Pentos, which has decided it is time to take controll over Spicetown on Driftmark, now when king was at war with Dragonstone and their army was elsewhere.
Image
Believing Pentos will only send small force that could be countered by Dragonstone´s vassals, Rhaena continued in her campaign.
Year ended and it saw Targaryens from Dragonstone in horrible position. King Aegon was dead and so was his brother Viserys. Their armies were reduced in power, forced to raid mouth of Blackwater and Crackclaw point and at war with Pentos.
All hopes Rhaena had for defending against Pentos was shattered when twelve thousand of Pentoshi troops landed at Sharp Point. Knowing she has no chance to win this war, she offered their surrender. Lord Velaryon, angered by this decision, threathened to leave with his fleet. It was only after being reminded that as uncle to Aegon and Rhaena, he was likely to be tortured and killed as soon as Maegor gets his hands on him.
Image
Only month passed, when new message came. Sensing weakness in Dragonstone, Lord Master Tregar of The Great Arm started gathering troops for slave raid on Dragonstone.
Image
Rhaena has had enough with the Pentoshi and decided to fight. Dragonstone prepared for siege and Rhaena bought service of mercenary company called Second Sons. When Pentoshi came, she was ready to aid the castle. She returned home and crushed her enemies. Even Dreamfyre, now partially healed, was able to help. Tregar D´han was captured in the battle and forced to pay substantial amount of gold as a compensation to the queen.
Image
With wars against Pentoshi over, Rhaena was once again able to continue her war effort against Maegor and also enlist Second Sons for longer time. Throughout the second half of year 46 AC, she continued her raids. It was at the turn of the year when change came.

Chapter 6: The end is near

Image
Pentoshi came for revenge. Tregar has died and his son, Pynto, has gathered force of three thousand men to once again raid Aerea´s lands. Rhaena was informed about this when she returned from her raid on lands around King´s Landing and immediately sent emissaries with gold to hire more mercenaries. She sailed north, to continue her war effort, ready to return to Dragonstone as soon as Pentoshi come close to Dragonstone.
They came month later, took over the harbor and besieged the castle. All Targaryens remained there, under protection of Valyrian walls.
Image
Rhaena returned home as quickly as possible and attacked the Pentoshi. She rode on Dreamfyre, young dragon now almost completely healed and wreaking havoc. The battle was won and those who remained sailed west.
In few days after the battle, mercenaries came and Rhaena started pursuing the enemy. She managed to rout parts of their army which were able to sail to Driftmark. But then, terrible news came. High Septon was captured in battle and remaining Faith Militant disappeared into the woods. Maegor set up his own High Septon, who was absolutely obedient. He was finally able to concentrate fully on his Targaryen enemies.
Image
Ravens were sent from Dragonstone, in a desperate attempt to persuade some lords to join them. Nobody responded. But when Maegor asked, all of those who supported him in his wars and even Baratheons, who joined in last months of Faith´s rebellion, joined him. While he still had enemies in form of small lords who were formerly allied with High Septon and now were in open rebellion do achieve independence from the Iron Throne, they were no match for him.
Image
It was a disaster. Maegor and his allies started retaking all land that was conquered by Rhaena, all of their armies bigger than hers. Only good thing was that she finally managed to destroy all groups of Pentoshi on the islands, once again allowing her to focus on the main war. She also hired new mercenaries, increasing her numbers to almost four thousand and her ships to 81.
Luckily, she was not completely lost. With everyone focusing on retaking King´s Landing and organizing the war effort, she was able to retake north of Crackclaw Point. But then Pentoshi came and besieged Dragonstone, which forced her to return home again.
Eighteenth day of eleventh month of year 47 AC, she was finally able to end threat of House D´han, enforcing them to again give Targaryens money as a compensation. But at the same time she was dealing with Pentoshi, first of enemy armies came to besiege Whispers.
Image
Rhaena knew she couldn´t wait. There was no chance for Jaehaerys or Alysanne to join her and there was nobody willing to tame Meleys after what she did to her brother. At least Dreamfyre was now completely healed, while Balerion still bore wounds from his battle with Quicksilver. She had but a short time before Redwyne, Arryn, Lannister and Baratheon fleets arrived and decided to act now. She hired two thousand more soldiers.
She said goodbye to her siblings and daughters and lead her fleet to the west. She got message from her spies in capital, saying Maegor is leading six thousand men to North Crackclaw, moving close to the shore.
As the year 48 AC began, she was preparing her landing north of Duskendale. But then, new message came: Maegor was not there. The king, for some reason, returned to King´s Landing, giving command over his force to his commanders.
She had to act. After it changed owner multiple times and was raided so often it became a normal part of their lives, it was but a shadow of its former glory, city with ruined walls and only small garrison. This was an oppportunity they couldn´t pass. She ordered her ships to sail to King´s Landing in one last, desperate attack against Maegor and Balerion.

Final days of the war
They came to the city on seventeenth day of first month of year 48 AC. In the middle of the night, her men used secret tunnels to Red Keep and attacked the guards. Mere minutes after that, shadow appeared on the sky. Dreamfyre landed on the courtyard, waking up the castle. At the same time, five thousand of her troops landed close to Mud Gate and quickly broke through.
Maegor Targaryen was awakened by his servants too late. When he donned his armor, enemies were already in his holdfast. He was found running through the Queen´s Ballroom, most likely trying to escape through one of secret tunnels. There was no doubt he would have tried to mount Balerion and defeat the invaders, but his plans were halted. The Black Dread slept through the battle, not posing any threat towards the invaders.
Spoiler: show
Image

As the sun rose, King´s Landing was under control of Rhaena´s troops and „king“ Maegor Targaryen was in the dungeons. Cvil war between Targaryens was over.

So, that just happened. There is quite funny in-game explanation of how this happened. After everyone turned on me and sieged back everything I took on the continent, I figured it won´t take long before they completely crush me (this was actually my second try, as first ended being quite bad writing material, where war was completely one-sided and Faith Militant lost Starry Sept and the war immediately afterwards). So, as I wasn´t able to get any more dragons available for fight, I figured I might as well try to kill him with Dreamfyre. I waited for a moment when his army will on shore, saved the game and attacked (sometimes, Dance of Dragons doesn´t appear, as one army can win too quickly, so if you want battle where dragons die, you always have to save beforehand)...and nothing happened. I thought it was the case of what I mentioned, so I reloaded. It was then when I realized Maegor wasn´t even there, even though he was leading his troops when I started marching my troops from my fleet. On third try, I pused each day and it turned out he for some reason stopped leading his troops two days before I arrived and just went chilling to KL. Well, when life gives you lemons... I went there, assaulted it and look who was captured in the process :D

Keen to see what shape this new order will take- even if the peace won't last long. Thinking of a political marriage for the young queen- to net an ally and keep the faith happy?

Yes, but there is an issue (I played one more year). I could marry heir of any of big houses matrilineally (hostages FTW), but I don´t want to do it, as logically, it should make that particular lord angry (his house will be forefully merged with Targaryens, especially in case of lords who don´t have another son), but in the game, they would be OK with it. And on the other hand, fifth son of lord Baratheon is apparently too high in succession line to marry Targaryen queen matrilineally.
So, unless there is some second or third son available, I will most likely try to find some Velaryon, Celtigar or Sunglass, who are all still High Valyrian, to preserve Valyrian looks.

Chapter 7: Aftermath

Image
Kingdom was now Aerea´s, but Rhaena knew all was not yet won. She had to be able to keep it. First act of Queen Regent was to execute former king. Maegor was beheaded next day. As executioner swung the sword, roar was heard around the city. Soon after that, huge shadow rose from Rhaenys´ hill and flew to the east. Few days later, message came from Dragonstone, where they saw black dragon landing/falling close to northern shore of the island.
Another victory for Rhaena was recovery of Targaryen Valyrian steel swords. She kept Blackfyre and gave Aerea Dark Sister.
Image
Rhaena haven´t stayed in King´s Landing for long. As a regent, she decided it is for the best if queen Aerea remained to rule from Dragonstone, until King´s Landing becomes safe and prosperous again. She also sent her army to deal with lords who tried to secede from Maegor after he defeated Faith Militant. While they needed a little bit of beatdown, eventually they chose to return to the fold.
From Dragonstone, Rhaena had to decide what to do with lords who supported Maegor. As nobody was willing to continue fighting (not to mention there was no possible claimant, as Maegor left no heir) and Targaryens didn´t have enough men to continue the war, Rhaena has decided for compromise. All lords will keep their titles and each of them will send their heir to be educated at court. All complied and realm returned to peace. High Septon was named as an advisor to the Small Council, to please the faith. Another spot was given to lord Davos Baratheon, husband to Aerea´s aunt. Yet only one month later, Maegor´s High Septon was captured by lord Meribald Sarsfield, still rebelling at that time and died few months afterwards. Officially, Rhaena was angered, but secretly thanked the Seven for getting rid of Maegor´s former puppet. New High Septon was appointed to her council as soon as he was named.
Even before another problem arose: What to do with that land? They have not been vassals of any of lords paramounts, something they didn´t take very kindly. Yet Rhaena was not willing to give Maegor´s supporters anything. Thus another set of wars started, between major houses and their former vassals. Even though Rhaena ordered them to stop, they didn´t listen. Lannisters and Tyrells even went to war with each other, although in this case, council chose to let them weaken each other.
At the same time, tensions of different kind arose. Aerea and Rhalla stopped playing with each other, something nobody besides their mother cared about, but which caused rivalry between queen and her sister.
Image
As the year ended, Targaryen armies were preparing to defeat House Sarsfield, last of the rebels. On the second day of year 49 AC, fishermen found huge carcass on northern shore. Balerion the Black Dread was gone, finally dying from his injuries caused by Dreamfyre.
Image
Month later, realm was finally brought back together and healing of wounds could now start.

Jaehaerys also has egg from Vermithor.
I am happy, though. All 4 of those dragons are similar in terms of strength and age, so there is potential for equal fights. I don´t know if you have ever played from this start, but my outcome is extremely lucky. In my first attempt, my dragons just died to Balerion/Vhagar and that was it. And one week before that, when I played as Aegon on 1.2 (that game made me to start this AAR, as I finally saw potential in that start), Vhagar was maimed (maybe by human, I don´t remember maiming her in my battles) and died, while Balerion managed to exterminate every remaining living dragon (screenshots are on Paradox GoT forum, all that remained of Targaryen dragons was Balerion and one egg). He is just too powerful, both in terms of fight against normal army and dragons and having him alive without Vhagar only means there will always be one dragonrider who can obliterate everyone else, unless RNGesus blesses one of the others.
Also, it is fun to have "generations" of dragons (by that I mean bunch of dragons born in span of few years) and watch how far they get. And I plan to make this AAR quite long, so in the end, we might get to see Vermithor or Silverwing reach their lore sizes and become new Balerion.

Dope. I really like dragons tbh, i began a playthrough on Robert's rebbelion as Rhaegar and went throgh some 5 generations, then the Velaryon dude pressed my niece claim, half the realm said "fuck yah" and he had 5 powerful dragon, while i had 2 super powerful, but they did not much his dragons. Ended in every dragon dying except one getting maimed, so i played untill he died. I was like "holy feces, i just went through the Dance of Dragons 2.0, i need to do an AAR from something like that". Had no images tho, so i began my AAR of the Blackfyre rebbelion

Nope. Two of his wifes were captured by High Septon and executed, while his Hightower wife had no children. To be honest, I have no idea who I will marry, as I want both of them married matrilineally, to increase number of Targaryens, but as I said before, apparently even 5th son of lord Baratheon is too high in succession line to marry queen of the Iron Throne.
Another option is to use console and move those characters to my court and marry them, because CK2 AI sometimes behaves extremely stupidly (I was declined by Velaryon, because his brother´s second son was too high in succession line).

Chapter 8: Growing up, part 1

Targaryens were saddened by Balerion´s passing. While this dragon killed Caraxes and Quicksilver under command of Maegor, it also was Conqueror´s dragon and the last being that lived at the time of Doom of Valyria. Yet their dragons weren´t threathened, as there were still four dragons alive, not to mention one egg from Vermithor.
Half a year after Balerion passed, message came from the North. Lord Brandon Stark died and his grandson, Ellard, inherited his title. He was also made Warden of the North by Small council.
Image
Realm was at peace and nothing interesting happened during remaining months of the year. As year 50 AC arrived, new issue came up: Jaehaerys. Young prince, now 16 years old, wanted to gain some title. He asked Rhaena about possibility of being appointed Prince of Dragonstone, but his sister declined, saying this honor will belong to Aerea´s heir. Yet there was another castle he could get. Glitterdell, castle in Westerlands that was usurped by Maegor from rebels, was still owned by Targaryens. Reluctantly, Rhaena agreed and made him its lord.
Image
At the same time, Westerlander war with Reach ended, with lord Lyman Lannister being its winner.
It was only during third month of the next year, when realm once again went to the war. Leo Tyrell has declared war upon Dorne, eager to claim the principality for himself.
Image
Barely month after that, white raven came from the Citadel. Winter was ending.
Image
This only allowed for fighting between Dorne and Reach to escalate. Lord Tyrell sent more than two thousand men to lay siege to undefended Sunspear, only to lose them when Dornish army, thirteen thousand strong, came from the desert. Small council debated, if they should help lord Tyrell, but it was decided to leave the war be. If someone was to conquer the Dorne, it was Targaryens and while Tyrells were allowed to try, the war was, they could expect no aid from the Crown.
At the end of the year, Lyman Lannister has finally decided to take matters to his own hands. He declared was on Jaehaerys, eager to assimilate his castle back to Westerlands. While council ordered him to stop, he didn´t listen. After losing battle against superior Lannister army and having his castle besieged, Jaehaerys surrendered and agreed to become Lyman´s vassal. At the same time, messenger from Quiet Isle came, asking for donations. Rhaena decided to give money to him, gaining approval of High Septon.
Year 52 AC came and little Aerea started showing spirit. She wounded Rhaena while playing, only increasing her mother´s problems with health (something she had since Aegon died)
During seventh month, Leo Tyrell passed away from old age, his son Mern inheriting the Reach and also his father´s war. He was also appointed Warden of the South and Lord Treasurer.
Image
And then, mere month later, terrible thing happened. In the evening of 17th day of eight month, Rhaena Targaryen was found dead in her bed. Her servants told the council she said she was going to get some sleep during afternoon, but when they brought her dinner, they found her body cold. Maesters found no trace of damage to her body and everyone agreed that she indeed died of her depression, something that can happen, as master said.
Image
Small council argued about who should become next regent, some demanding Jaeahaerys to return to Dragonstone to rule until Aerea is adult, but it was Mern Tyrell who eventually won. Yet it was not without compromises, though. He had to swear he won´t use Crown´s troops to fight his war with Dorne, which he reluctantly did.
Image
It was decided that Rhaena´s funeral shall be great event. All lords were invited and preparations were made. It took more than month, during which another issue came up: Dreamfyre.
With no Targaryen available to ride her, some members of the council were afraid what will she do and if it wouldn´t be better to kill her. It was only after lord Velaryon called them all idiots who have no idea about dragon behavior, when they finally shut up. As lord of Driftmark pointed out, wild dragons lived on Dragonstone for a long time and never hurt anybody. If they let them be, they wouldn´t do them any harm.
Yet presence of new free dragon interested some people. Islands in Blackwater Bay were probably the only place in the world, where High Valyrians still lived. While signs of merging with Westerosi was already showing, many among them, especially older courtiers who served the Conqueror, were still almost identical with Targaryens or Velaryons.
Just a month after Rhaena died, Dreamfyre landed on Dragonstone´s courtyard, ridden by Daeron, one of Aegon´s knights.
Image
Some in the small council wanted to immediately arrest him, but lord Tyrell once again prevailed.
„How many years will it take until Aerea or Rhalla can tame a dragon, my lords?“ asked Tyrell, „isn´t it better if we have one dragonrider available to us in that time? Someone to defend the queen if her uncle and aunt chose to press their claim?“
They all chose to agree with him, although Velaryon mentioned they may regret this decision soon.
At the start of tenth month, all visitors arrived and Rhaena´s funeral took place. Queen Regent was burned at Dragonstone and as soon as all guests left, Mern Tyrell placed another proposal for the council. With Rhaena dead and war long over, there was no reason to stay on Dragonstone. King´s Landing was the capital Aegon intended for his realm, not his old castle. Whole court prepared to leave and in only two weeks were they able to move to the Red Keep.
