Merchant Republic as my vassal?

PostPosted by JoPalma » Tue Sep 05, 2017 21:59

Hello! I was wondering, can't I have a merchant republic as my vassal like in the "vanilla" ck2? I granted a city, a county and a duchy (i suppose the high lordship is the equivalent to a duchy, am i wrong?) to a vassal, but as soon as i grant him the duchy, his government changes from republic to feudal... Help, please?

Is the city his capital or his also automatically gaining the castle along with the high lordship?
Smart and dumb are two sides of the same coin. Every time a new Stark is born the gods flip a coin . . . and it always seems to land on dumb.

ahh good question, i gave a guy one city and a lordship, with that he won the castle. he became the Lord Master of Sunstone. now, many years later, i can give a high lordship, but the current Lord Master has no city (but still is republican, weird no?), so i gave him a city and then the high lordship, and with that last one, he becomes feudal... can i change his capital somehow?

Just take the castle holding off him so he only has the city.

Works perfectly fine for me.
As King of the Iron Throne, I have my house vassal republic in Crackclaw Point, and created Republics in the High Lordships of Castamere (Westerlands), Seagard, the Bay of Crabs (Riverlands), Gulltown (Vale), White Harbour (North) and the Boneway (Dorne), transfered to the respective Lord Paramounts, to be able to raise a decent amount of ships in each of the seven Kingdoms and can't be blackmailed by a Greyjoy

Important is to not grant all titles at once- grant the city, wait a day (check the "Government Type" marker of the newly landed character and wait until it switches to republican city from feudal).
Then proceed to grant him the county, wait for the capital to change to the city, and grant the High Lordship.
At this point four new patrician families should create.
If you want traditional houses of the area as Patricians, kill off the landless patricians before they have sons, the landed local lords should assume patrician rank as long as their culture and religion fits the republican top liege.

If you don't mind pissing a few people off (and why would you, as the King, and they're not going to be your vassals anyway!), you can even install a traditional house in it's historical seat as patricians by revoking all their main titles and the city, and then re-granting it to a family member of f.i. House Manderly to be "Magister" of White Harbour :D
They'll of course hate you to the bone, but you can just transfer them to whomever you make LP of the North (to stick with the example).

Oh yes, haha, i dont know how i never thought about that, thanks Toccs!

knppel, thats a very nice idea! maybe in another save though, im far off to do that haha :P I started as Velaryon, got the high lordship of Dragonstone, broke out of the seven kingdoms and started conquering the Stepstones... i think the pirate house who is the historical liege was entirely butchered haha

Just a quick follow-up, if you're interested...

So, i successfully plotted to fabricate evidences of the Lord Master of Sunstone's treason against the crown and revoked his title. He didn't accept it and went in open revolt, allying himself with several nobles, including some pirate lords and my own brother (i don't understand why, since he had +100 opinion of me). During the bloody war, my brother and his dragon both died, together with two dragon raiders, one who was a commander of the realm and the other was an rebel. When i won the war, the former Lord Master was imprisioned and led to justice. He asked for a combat trial, which i attended and merciless killed him. After that, i followed knppel's suggestion and stuck with a historical ruler House, granting the City and the High Lordship to someone who had a good opinion of me and high stewardship skills.

All hail Laenor Velaryon "The Dragontamer", first of His name, King of Dragonstone and the Stepstones, Protector of the Temple of the Dragon, the True Blood of Valyria
