Sharing our work: Dropbox

PostPosted by Cabezaestufa » Sun Feb 19, 2012 14:18

I created a shared Dropbox folder so we can all upload our progress to the same place. For those of you who don't know it, Dropbox is a free file hosting service with some nice features that make it an interesting tool for projects such as this. You can use it in two ways: by uploading and downloading your stuff using their webpage, like any other file hosting service, or by installing their program, which will make things even simpler: It will create a folder in your PC that will stay synchronized automatically with your Dropbox files. It will be as if all of us share the same folder, and the files in it will be updated automatically whenever any of us changes or adds something (it goes without saying, but please don't delete anybody else's files, or modify them without warning).

The idea is to keep all our files there, so we can make our work available to everybody else in an easy way. So please, all of you guys who have a task already assigned, PM me the email address you'll want to associate to your Dropbox account (or the one already associated, if you have one) and I'll give you write permissions for the shared folder. After that, please upload your stuff there. For now, I'll only add people who have a task already assigned.

I'm also considering using a Subversion repository, but that might be a tad too much. I'm not sure how many of you are familiar with SVN and the like, so I think for now we can just use Dropbox. But if most of you can use SVN and/or would prefer it instead, that is also an option.

Do we need to give emails for this as well? I PM'd it to you, though I don't have anything to drop in at the moment.

Yes, but if you want to use an address I already have just say so. I ask just in case some of you already have a Dropbox account associated to a different address.

I strongly suggest using a Subversion (SVN) repository, at least in further stages of the project. We can get one for free on several places (including google) and it's infinitely useful.

I'll PM you the mail address.

I'd make a note of some of the changes I made, but need an invite to the Version spreadsheet... although it looks fairly unused.

Haha yea it is kinda unused. I wanted to use it but I kinda always forget to. maybe we really should switch to subversion. We could also add subversion additionally so you can both upload files to dropbox (team folder) and to the current build in subversion.
I could setup a subversion for us if you guys agree.

Every time I see "a new file has been added to dropbox" popup I smile a little.

Why not Try out SVN the Devs of 1257 (M&B) they Use it also with a combination of Dropbox i know it may be too much for you guys for you guys to do for just a mod. 1257 uses SVN to update the Test build of there mod so the testers cant accidentlty (me) delete some files. Dropbox is a good program for sharing files and such but SVN is probably a better chance of less accidents (yet again sorry).

Don't use suspicious cloud services as Dropbox which are also technically inferior as SVN or other centralized services.

Use github instead!

Sorry to intrude, but I thought it was best to ask publically: I was wondering if people not associated with the project would be allowed read-access to the repository / shared folder.

No, we had ppl maliciously deleting stuff, so we became reluctant assholes.
Prove yourself, provide content and you will be more then welcomed, like wolfgang pauli.

Why are you not using github? It allows easy collaboration for multiple people, has free hosting, and allows you to keep control over the whole thing. As a bonus they just now released a new and easy to use windows client.
