Religion Icons

PostPosted by dauncosony » Fri Apr 13, 2012 18:05

Hey guys, I'm new around here and from answers and screenshots, I found out that your religion icons are lacking. The current Seven and Old Gods icons are light and are on a light background. This has no contrast and makes seeing the icon more difficult. I don't mean to criticize, I just want to help. In fact, I want to help so much that I am offering you for free to redo and add in new religion icons! Not only will I add them for free but I will use my artistic skills (I am studying illustration) to create neat compositions and contrasting icons when compared to other religion icons for the sake of recognizability (probably not a word). I can't work right now actually, I'm at work (slow day), but when I get home, I will get onto it.

lol I was thinking the same thing. I work in an engineering office so I have access to professional architectural perspective software that I can convert high resolution files to .jpg / .png files which in turn can be converted to .dds files. However, I don't have access to a .dds file editor so I cannot crop images to correct sizes. I can however help by drawing the basic images on a larger resolution and you can add affects and finishing touches.

This a very large example I was working on for the faith of seven in .png format.

I might have to redraw the black line so it looks thinner in a smaller scale though.

Very neat! I have two sample, and unfinished, icons I have quickly made to give you guys an idea of what I am proposing for the Seven and Drowned God icons.

Image

I am trying to make them stay true to the motif of the vanilla icons, looking somewhat metallic. For the Seven, I used the ideal 7-pointed star, gold because I thought it looked appropriate, like the Catholic symbol in vanilla. For the Drowned God, I used a kraken, although I am not exactly 100% on it being a kraken. However, I used an iron-ish color to reflect the Ironborn, as they are pretty much an ethnoreligious group. If any other symbol is used, I would propose it to be grey like iron!

I would like to have comments on all of you, specifically lead modders (since I guess they have final word on things like this?) so I can make alterations before they're too late! Right now, I am actually preferring carlomok46's thin star over my broad star, but I would rather it be metallic like the vanilla icons.

Here are some proposals for other icons:

Old Gods: There are four choices I suggest. First, the basic oak tree, but more simplified. Second, the basic oak tree but with a red top for the leaves. Third, a red weirwood face, but it can interfere with heresies should they be implemented. Fourth, a red weirwood leaf and like the previous, it can interfere with heresies.

R'hllor: Obviously a warm flame is ideal for this.

Looks like we are beginning to attract some professional talent. It is most generous of you to offer us your artistic skills for FREE!

Look forward to seeing some work.

Aw shucks, I'm actually a student! Anyway I got some graphics done for other religion icons. I didn't bother finishing them because I'm sure some people would be against them. I just want to know what are people's thoughts on these icons.

The first three are icons I am proposing for the Old Gods. The first of which is a red weirwood face, which is personally my ideal choice. The second is a red five pointed leaf which is my least favorite. The third is a simple oak tree. The last icon is my proposed icon for R'hllor. Originally intended to be a simple flame, I decided to make it a flaming heart instead, however I don't think it looks it's best so far. My other ideas for R'hllor is a flame encased by a red heart or just a simple heart.

The symbols we have right now were made by me as placeholders only, I welcome professional takes on them :)

I personally like the oak for the old gods, it's more quickly recognizable as the symbol for the old gods.

Hey guys, I shrunk the Seven and Drowned Icons and fleshed out what was left. Here's what they can look like on the interface!

I still haven't done the icons for the Old Gods yet. I'm more of a painter instead of a graphic designer so I'm actually having trouble creating the ideal tree design for the Old Gods should an oak tree be used for the icon.

Edit: Nevermind what I said about the oak trees. Here are three Oak Trees of different colors.

Image

I used different colors because I'm not sure if the first one would blend in too much with the background, so I made a blue-purple one like Orthodox in vanilla, and a green one. I might push the hue for the green one to make it look emerald if it's necessary.

Taking a break from my painting project, I have decided to add in the icons into vanilla, excluding the other Old faith permutations. Keep in mind that the alpha channels were done poorly, only because I was somewhat in a rush.

Image

I find that the original color I used still works fine. Any comments and suggestions are welcome.

They look great! I prefer the grey/white tree for the old gods, that colour is synonomous with the north in my mind.

Hey guys, I was working on the icon for R'hllor worshippers. Here is what I have.

Image

For this one I placed the fire within the heart because I wanted the shape to be more noticeable. However, I'm not sure what color should the heart be, the orange heart is redundant compared to the flame within. I'd like some suggestions and comments on this.

Also, here's a bonus I made. It's a heresy Old God icon!

Got a few more hearts, I scrapped the whole fire in the heart thing. It turned out to be extremely distracting and I couldn't make something look like a fire in such a small space so I made these three.

Image Image Image

The last when I haven't touched up yet, mainly because I'm not sure if it's something we're looking for, but I feel that it's the best choice so far. I've been told that the first two are too Valentine's-y, which I agree.

Perhaps you could have the flames at the top of the heart?

I've made my own Stannis CoA (I know it is useless for the Robert's Rebellion scenario), perhaps you could base your design on my own?

Image

Probably best to have the flames half the size they are on my design.

Interesting, I'm actually watching Season 2 of GoT right now and it's a bit late for me to do anything right now, but I'll get on it tomorrow night to see how it can look. I might do two, one with a shorter flame and one with a longer flame to make it look like a tower, but that could pose some trouble with indication, but I will make one anyway.

It's alright, there's no rush :)

Yeah just come up with a few versions so we can see what options we have.

The overall designs for the icons are very nice, would it be possible to add a little more lighting and shading detail on them?

Of course! The previous icons I have made are not meant to be the finished product but to give the idea of what it can look like.

Hey, got back from work and here's what I have.

Image

Let me first say that I'm kind of against the towering flame, because now that I think about it, it is a bad idea to make it look similar to Stannis's banner. That would be a mistake in game design. Players might actually confuse Stannis with being the head of faith for R'hllor. The second one, however, is fine by me but I believe it can still cause some confusion.
