Taking the Black

Is there a way to do it voluntarily? I know we can let a son do it, but can we decide to send our own character to the Wall if we don't like him or/and if the heir is better than him?

I think it would be better to be able to abdicate the throne to your heir, instead of sending him off to the Watch.
